Abby Ross’ photographs: a brighter future for women in DRC

  • SumoMe

«If any female feels she need anything beyond herself to legitimate and validate her existence, she is already giving away her power to be self-defining, her agency.»
(bell hooks)

About the project:

These are portraits of women who have been victims of sexual violence. As a result they’ve been abandoned by a husband, a family, or even ostracized from entire communities.
These women have taken their lives into their own hands and are learning a vocational skill. They learn how to sew, or how to braid hair through micro-loans. They gain a job and the ability to train others. The training provides a tremendous amount of self-worth, a sense of purpose, and an independence that they’ve never had before.
